Yemi Alade and Bien drop "Don't Be Shy" — and it might be their best collaboration yet

There are collaborations that make sense on paper. And then there are the ones that make sense the moment you press play. Yemi Alade and Bien's "Don't Be Shy" belongs firmly in the second category — a record that sounds like two artists who have worked together long enough to stop trying and simply let it happen.

Released via Effyzzie Music, "Don't Be Shy" is the first single from Yemi Alade's forthcoming self-titled album IT'S YEMI ALADE — her eleventh studio project — and serves notice that whatever era is coming next, it is going to sound like this.

What the song is

"Don't Be Shy" is an Afro-R&B track produced by Nigerian hitmaker De Yaso alongside Kenyan producer Kobby Worldwide — and the production collaboration mirrors the artist one. De Yaso brings the structural sophistication of contemporary Nigerian Afropop. Kobby Worldwide brings the East African sensibility that has defined Bien's solo work. The result is a record that sits comfortably at the intersection of both worlds without feeling like a compromise from either.

The Kompa influence — the Haitian rhythm that has been steadily finding its way into African popular music — gives the track its distinctive pulse. It is slow enough to feel intimate, rhythmic enough to pull you onto a dancefloor, and melodically warm enough to stay in your head long after the song ends.

The subject matter is exactly what the title suggests: the magnetic pull between two people confident enough to say what they feel, and the particular energy of that moment before feelings are spoken aloud. It is a mood more than a narrative — and both Yemi and Bien understand how to inhabit a mood without over-explaining it.

"I have always loved the soulfulness of Bien's music and working with him on this record was so easy," Yemi says. "In 'Don't Be Shy' we are both being playful, confident and honest in expressing feelings when you're into someone. It's a great jam to dance to, but also warm and intimate."

Bien adds: "Working with Yemi was an incredible experience because the energy felt natural from the beginning. 'Don't Be Shy' is about confidence, chemistry and enjoying the moment. We want you to just feel good and loosen up when this song comes on."

A creative history worth knowing

This is not the first time these two have been in a studio together — and that history is part of what makes "Don't Be Shy" work as well as it does.

Their creative journey traces back to the Sauti Sol and Yemi Alade classic collaboration "Africa" — one of the most celebrated pan-African musical moments of its era. Since then, Yemi recorded a Swahili version of "Nagode," and contributed to the remix EP of Bien's "All My Enemies Are Suffering." Each collaboration has been distinct, and each has added a layer to a creative relationship that is now deep enough to produce something like "Don't Be Shy" — a track that sounds effortless precisely because the effort behind it is invisible.

Two artists at the peak of their powers

The timing of this release is notable for both artists independently.

Yemi Alade arrives at "Don't Be Shy" as one of the most decorated female artists in African music history — a GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter with ten studio albums, a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador role and a discography that includes "Johnny," "Mama Africa," "Black Magic" and the most recent "Rebel Queen." IT'S YEMI ALADE will be her eleventh project, arriving ahead of a major showcase in Paris — and if the first single is the standard the album is being measured against, anticipation is justified.

Bien arrives from the most creatively prolific period of his solo career. Following two decades as a founding member of Sauti Sol — one of the most significant bands in African music history — his solo work across "Bald Men Love Better," "Alusa Why Are You Topless" and the 2025 project "Alusa Continua" has established him as one of East Africa's most compelling and intellectually adventurous contemporary artists. His Grammy songwriting credit, Trace Award wins and sold-out international tours confirm that the solo chapter is not a footnote to the Sauti Sol story. It is a chapter in its own right.

Together on "Don't Be Shy," they are not two artists combining audiences. They are two artists producing something neither would make alone — and that is the only kind of collaboration worth paying attention to.
