Every July, tequila gets its moment. World Tequila Day falls on 24 July, but the whole month has grown into a broader celebration of a spirit that genuinely earns its global following. Behind every bottle is a story of patience, craft and tradition that most people who have only ever taken tequila as a shot have never had the chance to appreciate. That is exactly what this month is about changing.
It All Starts With the Agave
Unlike most spirits, authentic tequila is built on a single ingredient: the Blue Weber agave. It grows in the volcanic soils of Mexico and takes between six and eight years to reach maturity before it can be harvested. That timeline alone sets tequila apart.
When the time comes, skilled harvesters known as jimadores remove the leaves by hand to reveal the heart of the plant, called the piña. Those piñas are slow-cooked to draw out their natural sugars, then fermented and distilled in a process where every stage leaves its mark on the final spirit. There is no shortcut that does not show up in the glass.
Blanco, Reposado and Añejo: Knowing the Difference
The tequila category breaks into three distinct expressions, each with its own personality and ideal moment.
Blanco is bottled shortly after distillation, which means it captures the freshest, most vibrant side of the agave. Crisp and citrus-forward, it is the natural home for cocktails like the Margarita and Paloma.
Reposado, which translates to rested, spends several months ageing in oak barrels. The result is a softer, rounder spirit with notes of vanilla and spice layered over the underlying agave character. It sits comfortably between cocktails and sipping.
Añejo takes the longest journey, maturing for at least a year in oak and emerging with real complexity: toasted oak, dried fruit and warm spice. This is a tequila to slow down for.
How Don Julio Brought World Tequila Month to Nairobi
Throughout July, Don Julio took the story of tequila beyond the bottle and into some of Nairobi's most respected premium venues. At Ciel Lounge, Club 11:11 and INTI, guests were invited into curated tasting experiences led by professionally trained mixologists, each designed to showcase what a well-made tequila cocktail actually looks and tastes like when the right expression meets the right serve.
A crisp Blanco Margarita. A refreshing Reposado Paloma. A refined Añejo Old Fashioned. Each serve was built to highlight the character of the tequila rather than mask it, encouraging a deeper appreciation of what goes into every pour.
A Spirit Worth Sipping Slowly
The case for tequila as a sipping spirit rather than a shot ritual has never been stronger. When you understand the years that go into a single bottle, from the agave fields of Jalisco to the barrel and finally the glass, it changes how you drink it.

World Tequila Month is a reminder that some things genuinely cannot be hurried. Don Julio has spent decades proving that point. This July in Nairobi, a few more people got to find out for themselves.
