The Agave Affair: why Nairobi's first tequila festival is arriving at exactly the right moment

The Agave Affair lands at KICC on 25 July 2026 — Nairobi's first dedicated tequila festival. Here's why the timing is perfect and what to expect when you get there.

Something has been building in Nairobi's premium spirits scene for the past three years. You can see it in the cocktail menus that now carry reposado and añejo options alongside the standard blanco. You can see it in the Don Julio 1942 that has become the bottle of choice at the city's most considered events, from Tribal Chic's runway to private tables at Hero Bar. You can see it in the conversations happening between Nairobi consumers who increasingly know the difference between a 100% agave tequila and a mixto, and have opinions about which they prefer.

Nairobi's premium drinking scene is set for a historic shift as The Agave Affair festival prepares to debut at KICC this July. On Saturday 25 July 2026, that building interest becomes a full-scale celebration. Radio Africa Events and KICC are hosting Agave Affair 2026 — Nairobi's first premium tequila festival celebrating agave heritage and culture. It is not simply a new event on the calendar. It is the moment Kenya's tequila moment officially announces itself.

Agave Affair

What the event actually is

Running for 10 hours from afternoon into the night, The Agave Affair has been designed as a complete lifestyle festival rather than a conventional drinks event. A large Main Tent will serve as the central attraction, surrounded by brand activations, cocktail stations, premium tasting zones and interactive experiences designed to encourage exploration.

Running from 4 PM until late, Agave Affair promises a carefully curated sonic journey that evolves as the day progresses. The music will begin with relaxed Afrobeats during golden hour before transitioning into energetic Amapiano, Afro-house, timeless Hip-Hop and R&B, ensuring every stage of the evening has its own unique soundtrack.

Already confirmed on the lineup are celebrated Nairobi DJ and producer DJ Mista C, renowned for effortlessly blending Hip-Hop, Afrobeat, Gengetone and urban sounds, alongside DJ Tophaz, popularly known as "Mr. 5ive Star", whose Vibez O'clock online mixes have attracted millions of views. DJ Big Chipi, one of the region's leading female Amapiano DJs, is also confirmed, alongside Tha Daqchild, widely recognised as the King of Good Times thanks to his energetic sets. More performers are still to be announced.

Guests can also expect a wide selection of food offerings ranging from Mexican-inspired flavours such as tacos to barbecue favourites and gourmet festival cuisine. Networking spaces and relaxed social areas will allow visitors to unwind between tasting sessions, discover new products and meet fellow enthusiasts.

With more than 2,000 guests expected, organisers are positioning the event as a new annual lifestyle fixture on Nairobi's entertainment calendar.

The unique angle: what you will actually learn

Most festival previews tell you what the lineup is. This one is worth reading for what the event is trying to do to your understanding of a spirit most Kenyans have been drinking the wrong way.

For many Kenyans, tequila has traditionally been associated with quick shots during nights out. The Agave Affair hopes to change that perception, instead positioning tequila as a sophisticated sipping spirit that can also be enjoyed through carefully crafted cocktails and premium tasting experiences.

The education strand of the event is genuinely worth engaging with. Guests will have the opportunity to sample different tequila styles, interact with brand ambassadors and discover how production methods influence taste, aroma and character. Among the traditional techniques celebrated is the Tahona method, in which harvested agave is crushed with a massive volcanic stone wheel, preserving centuries-old production traditions still practised by many premium producers.

That detail matters more than it might initially seem. The Tahona method is one of the clearest dividing lines between mass-produced and artisanal tequila — a process so labour intensive that most large commercial producers have abandoned it in favour of mechanical crushing. The brands that still use it are making a deliberate choice about quality over efficiency, and the flavour difference is measurable. Learning to recognise it in a tasting is genuinely useful knowledge.

Visitors will also learn fascinating facts behind some of the world's best-known tequila brands, from individually hand-blown bottles to hidden packaging details that pay tribute to family histories and regional heritage. Contrary to popular belief, authentic tequila does not contain a worm inside the bottle. That characteristic belongs to certain mezcals, not tequila, which is governed by strict production regulations in Mexico.

Why Kenya is ready for this

Africa recorded a 23% rise in tequila imports between 2023 and 2025, driven in significant part by Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria. Kenya's consumer is not discovering tequila for the first time at the Agave Affair. They are arriving at an event that meets them at a point where their curiosity has already developed into genuine interest, and where the infrastructure to take that interest further — premium brands, educated bartenders, events like this one — is finally in place.

The Agave Affair is the formal expression of something that has been growing informally for years. The brands already present in the Nairobi market — from the accessible entry points to the ultra-premium expressions that have been earning their place at the city's most significant cultural events — all benefit from an audience that understands more about what they are drinking. That understanding is what the festival is designed to build.
